Meet the authors behind Energy Accounting

Who are we?

Our Energy Accounting is a method created by an autistic psychologist and further developed and clinically tested with one of the world’s leading autism experts.

The result is a method based on deep personal and professional knowledge of autism as well as the challenges that so often co-exist with autism, such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD. The Energy Accounting method is permeated with profound respect for the people it is intended to help, and is designed to be customized to each individual, taking into account each person’s challenges and circumstances.

The creators of Energy Accounting, Maja Toudal and Dr. Tony Attwood, have made additional resources available on this website, including Handouts directly related to the book, and relevant reading material and methods.

How Was Energy Accounting Developed?

Energy Accounting began when Maja Toudal went on a journey of self-discovery to find a way to manage her own stress while attending school. Along the way, she discovered bits and pieces of knowledge and strategies that worked, and she combined them to create a more cohesive, overall method.

In 2012, while visiting Dr. Tony Attwood in Australia, they discussed Energy Accounting as she was using it at the time, and Tony began implementing it into his clinical work. He quickly saw the benefits it provided to his clients. Since then, Maja and Tony have had regular online calls to discuss their work and the Energy Accounting method, continuing to build and refine it.

What Does Energy Accounting Do?

Energy Accounting is a visual and structured method of discovering and learning about one’s own stressors, strategies for stress management, and stress prevention, in the pursuit of an increased quality of life.

Many forms of stress management strategies exist, but in Energy Accounting, we seek to create a larger toolbox for each person, acknowledging that no single strategy solves everything. For this reason, Energy Accounting means that we work on every level of a person’s life – from the bigger picture to the smaller details – to learn how to make that person’s life work better for them. We also work in a way that encourages continuous self-discovery, because we believe that people continue to learn and grow throughout their entire lives, and that many factors throughout the lifespan will affect stress levels. Because of this, we never assume that the Energy Accounting journey is over – instead, we focus on teaching people the skills they need to become as independent as possible with their own Energy Accounting.
